Most Common Driving Test Mistakes

February 06, 2019
Taking your driver’s test can be an intimidating experience, even if you consider yourself to be a fairly-skilled driver with enough practice. Driving, like any other skill, can become a challenge to do confidently with an instructor sitting right next to you. Even though some may pass on their first try, others let their nerves get the better of them. While driving, one needs to be fully aware of everything that they are required to do and everything that is happening around them. In order to aceyour driving test, try your best not to make these common mistakes.

Failing to Check Blind Spots

Irrespective of whether you are changing lanes or reversing your car, make sure to check your blind spots before doing so. You must be aware of everything that is going around, while keepingup with the traffic in front of you. Always remember to use your mirrors, turn your head to check for any vehicle or pedestrian in your blind spot, give a signal (if you’re turning) and then make the decision to change lanes or reverse your car.

Rolling Stops

Not stopping completely is the most common mistake that test givers can make. Due to stress, or lack of observation, candidates only slow down when passing a junction, and even when they do stop, their car is not within the line. It is crucial to stop completely, observe the passing cars, and then move on with your driving. Take your time, you should stop for at least 3 seconds.

Inappropriate Speed

It is not only about driving slowly; it’s about maintaining a steady speed while you’re driving. Regardless of who is sitting next to you or where you are, maintaining speed is one of the things that make an expert driver. Your control over your driving speed will show your confidence and real-time decisiveness. Every now and then, glance at your dashboard to keep your speed in check, particularly as per the road you are on. You may also get points off for going too slow and slowing down traffic.

Acting on a Four-way

When crossing an intersection with stop signs, especially a four-way stop, be sure to wait for your turn and then go. It is very important that you are aware of what you have to do while you cross anintersection. Make sure that you signal your movement when making a turn and know that if two cars are at the intersection atthe same time, then the one on the right goes first.

Abrupt Braking

Brake pedals may vary from car to car, so make sure to familiarize yourself with how much pressure you need to exert when pressing the brakes. Sudden braking is only acceptable in emergencies, but while driving on a busy road try to slow your speed first before halting in front of a signal or sign. Never press the brakes with enough pressure to throw you or the other passengers forward.

Maintaining Distance

Whether you are driving behind a caror stopping at a signal, it is crucial to keep a safe distance from the car in front of you. It is important to foresee that the vehicle in front of you can swerve or stop for any reason, and in case it does, you will have plenty of space to save your car from an accident or a nasty dent. We tend to make the most unusual mistakes while we are under pressure. So, remember to appear for your test when you feel confident enough and just stay calm. Your ability to think amplifies when you are relaxed, and that will help you remember these important pointers.
